Sunday is sublime, as we begin a two-week hurtle toward Christmas Day, and pause prior to gearing up our prep game for the season. Snuggle down, then, for a couple of hours, and lose yourself in a movie (or two!). You’ve got a crazy number of choices, between now and midnight—8 movies and 4 specials, in all, across 5 over-the-air networks!
*ABC continues its Disney-featured weekend, with the broadcast television premiere of its mega-hit, Frozen, at 7pm CST, followed by a “Making of” special at 9.
*CBS is following last week’s showing of an I Love Lucy Christmas compilation, with a similarly colorized Dick Van Dyke Show with a holiday theme, also airing at 7pm CST.
*FOX knows it would not be Christmas without a festive visit with The Simpsons. Krusty the Clown finds himself at Homer and Marge’s house for this year’s fun episode, at 7pm CST, too.
*ION’s night of holiday films start an hour earlier, at 6pm CST, with Christmas Truce. At 8, tune in for the romantic comedy of A Husband for Christmas, followed at 10 by A Cinderella Christmas. The evening’s ION offerings end with Merry Ex-mas, which airs for you night owls at Midnight.
*GET TV is running the excellent Hallmark film, Ms. Scrooge, again, at 4:45pm CST, and it serves as the perfect warm-up for A Christmas Carol, with Patrick Stewart, at 6:45. Then, at 9pm CST, there’s the terrific Perry Como Christmas In Austria, which runs, again, a 2nd time, at Midnight. Between the two screenings of the Como show, though, at 10pm CST, GET TV offers up The Sons of Mistletoe.
Lots to choose from, and a fun evening’s entertainment, with something for everyone.

Free TV Holiday Specials for December 10, 2016

dec10

On the Tenth Day of Christmas—well, the tenth of December, at any rate—our true loves give to us (if by “true loves”, we mean “over-the-air TV stations”, which, this being a cord-cutting blog, seems reasonable) another full day of holiday viewing that we don’t have to pay for.
All day today, Cozi-TV is running a marathon of one of the best-loved family shows of the seventies, Little House on the Prairie. Granted, that’s not exclusively holiday-themed, but it is family-safe, wholesome, and so forth. Another “honorable mention” on today’s schedule—not holiday, per se, but definitely one the whole fam can partake of—is Mary Poppins, airing tonight at 7:00 PM CST on ABC. (And while that isn’t a holiday movie, it is, of course, a jolly ‘oliday wif Mary, so there’s that.)
As for the according-to-Hoyle holiday specials, they start at 1:00 PM CST. MyTV is airing 12 Dog Days ‘Till Christmas, TBN offers The Christmas Box, and The CW, much like MyTV, is going to the dogs—specifically, The Dog Who Saved Christmas.
At 2:00 PM CST, ION shows A Christmas Wedding Date, for those of you wishing to force boyfriends to watch something; at 2:30, TBN will run Christmas with the Crabb Family (which, to clarify, is not about a family of crabby people who learn the true meaning of Christmas, but about a family of Gospel singers whose surname is literally Crabb).
At 3:00 PM, TBN follows the Crabbs with Max Lucado: God Came Near, an adaptation of a story by a much-loved Christian author. ION takes the reins (of the sleigh, if you will) at 4:00 with All I Want For Christmas, followed by A Christmas Reunion at 6:00.
At 7:00 PM, if you’re looking for old-school, iconic Christmas specials, look to an old-school, iconic network: CBS. The “Tiffany Network” leads off the prime-time hours with Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, broadcast in high-definition (so you can really see how misfit the toys are), followed by Frosty The Snowman at 8:00, and Frosty Returns at 8:30.
Also at 8:00, ION will run Christmas with the Andersons (which, to clarify, is not about a family of Anderson-y people who learn the true meaning of Christmas, but about a family whose surname is literally Anderson), followed by Holiday Road Trip at 10:00, and A Christmas Mystery at 12:00 Midnight.
Enjoy your viewing!

Free TV Holiday Specials for Dec. 6, 2016

12-6-2016collage

Looks like slim pickins, tonight, with only 3 holiday offerings on free tv—all of them movie-length—but a couple are timeless gems, nevertheless. On ION Life, they’re running Christmas Twister, again, at 9pm Central/Mountain. Then, over on Get TV, the heartwarming A Christmas Gift airs at 8pm Central/Mountain. Starring singer-songwriter John Denver, and Malcolm In The Middle’s Jane Kaczmarek, Gift tells the story of  a widowed New York City architect and his young daughter, who find themselves in a small mystical Rocky Mountain town where everyone believes in Santa Claus. It’s followed, at 10pm, by the 1987 Lou Diamond Phillips and Jack Warden vehicle, The Three Kings.  In Los Angeles, three mental patients think they are the Wise Men seeking Jesus in (then) contemporary California, and hilarity ensues. The Sterling Silliphant storyline saves what could be a corny mess, and Phillips, at the height of his La Bamba-era popularity, and the rest of the cast, genuinely look like they’re having fun. We bet you will, too! Happy viewing!
